THE PROBLEM

In 2012, the Kôkôjagõti media collective was born out of the desire of the leadership in the Kayapó community of A’Ukre, Brazil to create visual media representing their cultural heritage, to archive existing community media, and to build an in-house solar powered media center. In 2015, our team partnered with the Kayapó People, and together, we have supported the energy, infrastructure, and other needs for the media center.

However, the media center has developed issues making it difficult workers of the Kôkôjagõti media collective. These issues include mosquitoes and other insects entering the building, poor ventilation, and holes forming in the paneling of the building. In addition, the growth of the collective has led to a growing need for both physical and data storage space. Thus, the objective of the GAPS Brazil team is to design a new media center that accounts for these factors. The GAPS Brazil team has five focus areas to address these problems for the Spring 2023 semester: Construction Planning, Airflow Visualization, Photovoltaic Monitoring, Local Network Data Storage, and Crowdfunding,

THE SOLUTIONS

Construction planning

The construction planning sub-team is working on preparing a media center design for the construction proposal. A preliminary layout of the floorplan has been approved by our community partners. Additionally, building materials for the foundation, floors, walls, roofing, windows, and doors have been decided. This team's primary goal is to contact construction firms to take up the construction of the media center as a project.

Airflow visualization

The goal of the airflow visualization sub-team is qualitatively analyze active and passive ventilation schemes in the media center. For passive ventilation, they conducted research on two important factors: weather conditions and building structure. They then proceeded to map out a buouancy driven representation of the airflow. Lastly, for the active ventilation, after intensive research they proposed solar fans as the most option.

local network data storage

The purpose of the local network and data storage sub-team is to design video storage system to preserve filmmakers' culture/history. The current system is USB-connected and 1-2TB hard drives, which poses problems such as: limited capacity, slow transfer speeds, data loss, and difficulty in file management. The target of this team is to recommend an ideal storage system based on the filmmaker's needs.

photovoltaic monitoring

The photovoltaic monitoring sub-team is working to design a solar power monitoring system for the purpose of easy and efficient maintenance and troubleshooting. The main purpose of this sub-team is to implement a monitoring system that can be used with any basic solar power system and will eventually be implemented in the media center.

crowdfunding

Community requires help of governmental organizations to help fund such projects. This team is trying to help in accomplishing these goals by raising funds for the construction of the media center and raising awareness of the campaign to increase donations via different advertising means.
